Here’s today’s Bottom Line

An area of low pressure will continue to lift north over upstate South Carolina, and crawl slowly northeast across our area … possibly lifting directly over Columbus County … through this afternoon. This low is along a stationary front that is snaking from the Outer Banks southward through SC, then curving westward through southern Georgia.

The low pressure center will continue to slowly drift northeastward over eastern North Carolina through late tonight, before finally pushing offshore near Virginia Beach by time we clock in at work on Friday.

Occasional showers and a chance for thunderstorms will likely come in “waves” through this afternoon, with dry periods and perhaps a few breaks of sunshine as well.  Rainfall totals by tonight, for the whole event, should average out around an inch for most areas… some more, some less.

Friday should be relatively quiet as a deep westerly flow keeps us rain free, with the exception of a few isolated thunderstorms along the sea-breeze. Coverage should be limited and spotty.

Things become a little more active into the weekend as a series of impulses pinwheel around a much larger area of low pressure over the northeast US. Sunshine, heat, instability, and the threat for thunderstorms at any given point will be the rule Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. The NWS Storm Prediction Center has our area under a 15% severe risk for Saturday.

TROPICAL OUTLOOK:  No tropical system development is expected as much of the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean remains under the influence of ridging high pressure.  Typical thunderstorm activity will be widespread over the Gulf but there’s no organization to any of that.
