
West Columbus recently named Gage Hammond as the new varsity baseball coach.
Hammond was a standout baseball player for the Vikings, where in his sophomore year, he helped the Vikings to the Eastern Finals. His senior year he posted a .385 batting average, hit 10 home runs, with 18 runs batted in, and scored 23 runs while making all-conference.
After high school, Hammond attended Southeastern Community College. At SCC, he was a 2019 NJCAA All-American and named Region 10 Player of the Year for the Rams. His sophomore year, he hit .431, hit 11 HR’s, and had 50 runs scored. He later attended UNC-Pembroke, where his senior year in 2022, he pelted seven HR’s, knocked in 47 RBI’s while having a .410 batting average.
He has served as JV coach and assistant varsity coach at West Columbus the last couple of seasons. Hammond has a B.S. in Criminal Justice from UNCP and is currently teaching social studies for the Vikings.
