The murder of a Ukrainian woman on a commuter train in Charlotte is sparking calls for stricter sentencing guidelines for repeat criminals as well as oversight of local judges. Rep. Brenden Jones was interviewed on Newsmax Tuesday discussing the General Assembly’s plans to handle rising crime rates and mental health care. Iryna Zariutska was stabbed to death by a 14 time convicted felon who had been released without bond. The Justice Department has filed charges against him along with the state.
Norm Foggan (the son of the late Norman Foggan III) of Snake Island Road is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the hand early Monday. Foggan told deputies he was cleaning his handgun around 3:00 a.m. when it discharged. He was transported to an area hospital.
Testimony is continuing in the first degree murder trial of Prentiss McDuffie. McDuffie and two other men shot and killed three members of a Pleasant Plains area family during a robbery in 2019. Darieus Washington has already been convicted in the murders.
