North Carolina’s regulated sports wagering industry continues to generate millions in tax revenue for the state’s universities. Eighteen months after sports wagering was legalized, more than $41 million in tax revenue has been collected and distributed directly to athletics programs at 13 UNC System institutions.

Pursuant to state law, roughly 20 percent of the taxes paid to the state by licensed sports wagering companies goes to athletics programs across the UNC System.

Since legalized sports wagering went live in March 2024, UNC System schools have received $41.2 million in funding, translating to more than $3.1 million per institution.

This consistent, multi-million-dollar funding stream has bolstered small- and mid-size athletics departments throughout the state, relieving budget pressures and strengthening services schools can provide to students.

“Sports wagering companies are proud to play by the rules and pay a reasonable tax to responsibly serve North Carolina customers,” the Sports Betting Alliance said in a press release. “Less than two years after legalization, more than $41 million in tax revenue has been reinvested in North Carolina’s public universities — strengthening athletics programs across the state and giving them the ability to withstand unexpected challenges.”

The UNC System institutions receiving this tax revenue are: Appalachian State University; East Carolina University; Elizabeth City State University; Fayetteville State University; NC A&T State University; NC Central University; UNC Asheville; UNC Charlotte; UNC Greensboro; UNC Pembroke; UNC Wilmington; Western Carolina University; and Winston-Salem State University.
