The weather may be cooling down, but Columbus County is hot off the presses with fall activities. There’s plenty of fun and fellowship to be had, so don’t miss out on all the events happening near you.

Spooky season is right around the corner, and local venues are rolling out the Halloween red carpet. Hallsboro Artesia Elementary School got a little upgrade to the building last week. Teacher Sharon Zickafoose won a $4,000 grant to provide blinds for the classrooms at the front of the school. Friends, family, and donors contributed another $1,000 for the cause, and the blinds were installed by Jeff Caswell. Lowes Home Improvement cut them to size to fit the windows perfectly.  

If you’re looking for something fun to do this month, the Fair Bluff Senior Center has you covered. The first event of the season will be a Bingo game with Gentiva on Sept. 10 from 11 a.m. -12 p.m. at the facility, and an immunization clinic will take place at Walgreens on Sept. 11 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. The center is located at 1100 Main St., Fair Bluff.  

Storytime will resume at the Bladen County Public Library’s main branch. The reading will commence at 10 a.m. on Sept. 11. The facility can be found at 111 North Cypress Street in Elizabethtown.

Some first responders walked away with bragging last week at the Wellness Health Fair hosted by the Donayre Cancer Center. The winners of the ‘Battle of the Badges’ cornhole tournament were Kyle McDaniel and Justin Faulk of Whiteville Fire.  

Lieutenant Thomas Riggins of Whiteville PD and Tavon Pierce of the CCSO took home second place, and Cassie Dawson of Columbus Regional Healthcare Systems and Whiteville PD Chief Rockenbach (not pictured) took third place.

Sept. 13 starts a new season of flock swaps at Gurganous Farm Store in Whiteville, and there’s no cost to participate. Bring your birds, small livestock, farm supplies and equipment to buy, sell or trade, or get a head start on your own flock and herd.  

The swap will be from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Farm Store located just off South Madison Street at 6 Whiteville Plaza. 

There will be a ladies community Bible study on Saturday, Sept.13, from 9-10 a.m. at Candlewood Farms Coffee and Bakery. There will be coffee, treats, and plenty of fellowship at the monthly gathering. Candlewood is located at 721 South Madison Street in Whiteville.  

The Columbus County Farmers Market will hold Honey Day this Saturday, Sept. 13, from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. There’s a whole lineup of vendors, beekeepers, museum activities, music, food and so much more. The market can be found at 132 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville.  

Honey Day will also be going to the dogs right across the street from the farmers market at the Julie M. Strickland Fitness Park on Sept. 13. The inaugural ‘Pawllinators’ pollinator –themed dog parade will start at 9 a.m. 

Dress up your furry best friend as a bee, butterfly, or any one of your favorite flower-traveling insects and have a walk around the park. The facility is located at 131 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville.  

If you’re up for an art exhibit, Karen Sboto will be showing her paintings of the beautiful landscapes of Lake Waccamaw on Sept. 13 from 1-7 p.m. The event will be held at the Lake Waccamaw State Park, and refreshments will be served.

After you’ve shopped until you dropped and checked out some art, head over to the Milk B4 Meat Ministries’ third annual ‘Night of Praise’ that evening, Sept. 13, at 5 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Park of America. The event is free, and there will be food, concessions, and a bake auction.   

Pastor Buddy Seay, the Beaverdam youth, CRC Band, Tammy Walton, Carla and Redemption, Alyssa Strickland, Candace Sumner, and the Transformation Praise Team with special guest Lisa Pierce are among the lineup of singers and speakers for the evening.   

 The VMPA is located at 6354 James B. White Highway South, Whiteville.   

Speaking of the Veterans Memorial Park of America, the park will host their second annual ‘Faith in Motion: Car Show and Praise Extravaganza’ on Sept. 27 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the park. The event is sponsored by PFWB Men’s Fellowship.

A sweet little girl named Penelope turned eight years old last week, and for her birthday, she collected $300 to donate to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Animal Protective Services. The BCSO APS thanked the young lady for all her hard work and wished her a very happy birthday.   

Grissettown-Longwood Fire Department will be opening their haunted trail for another season of spookiness every Friday and Saturday evening from 7-10 p.m. during the month of October and from 7-10 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31, for Halloween night.   

Tickets are $20 per person, and you can get yours by calling 910.287.3030 or by visiting www.grissettownfire.com.  The station can be found at 758 Longwood Road in Ocean Isle Beach.

Congratulations are in order for Leroy Boyd in Tabor City. He received the ‘Juanita Cook Miss Puddin’ N Pie’ Spirit Award from the NC Yam Festival Association. Boyd was tapped as the official driver of the Grand Marshall for the festival’s parade over ten years ago.  

His award was presented by Tiger Lovette, the Yam Man himself, who was the first recipient of the Puddin’ N Pie title.  

Columbus County Schools and Southeastern Community College are partnering up to host a night full of useful tips for all Columbus County juniors, seniors, and their parents. ‘College, Career, and More’ is scheduled for Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. at the SCC Carteret Building on the college’s campus.  

The evening will include information about college admissions, financial aid, military and career pathways, and more. There will be a raffle giveaway, and food and refreshments will be provided.
