On October 16, 2025, at 10:57am., God called home another angel from Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC.
Berteneta Cummings Figueroa was born to the late Amos Cummings, Jr. and Hildreth Gertrude Freeman Cummings on September 6, 1956.
She was united in holy matrimony to Pedro Figueroa and out of that union were born two sons. Berteneta is survived by her two sons, Manuel Figeroa (wife Morgan) of Riegelwood, NC, and Antonio Figueroa of Leland, NC; her mother Hildreth Gertrude Cummings; four brothers, Seth Cummings (wife Paula), Willie Cummings (wife Joanne), Anthony Cummings (wife Patsy) and Bobby Cummings (wife Janie) all of Bolton, NC; three sisters Lessie Oxendine, Renee Cummings Jacobs of Bolton, NC., and Tina Flores of Kinston, NC. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren Jae Manuel Figueroa and Selena Rae Figueroa of Riegelwood, NC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, friends; and a special friend, Cheryl Martinez.
She is preceded in death by her father Amos Cummings, Jr; sister Loretta Lynn Cummings; both maternal and paternal grandparents; a niece Audriana Cummings; and great-niece Kashlynn Jace Cummings, and nephew Ryan Young, along with several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Berteneta, or “Miss B” as she was affectionately known, was a devoted member of New Hope Baptist Church. She dedicated much of her life singing in churches with her Father and family. She served faithfully wherever she was needed. She was known for her kindness, her willingness to help others, and her unwavering love for family and community.
She loved her family deeply, but nothing was above the two sons she cherished – until her grandchildren came along. She lovingly called them her answered prayers. Berteneta was a true hero to many, facing the challenges of her health with grace and steadfast faith. She never wavered in her trust in God’s unchanging hand. Her strong faith and radiant testimony touched everyone she met, leaving behind a shining example of what it means to be a true disciple of Christ.
Her light, love, and laughter will forever remain in hearts of all who knew her.
Her funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, October 23, 2025 at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Zach Jacobs, Elder Michael Jacobs and Rev. Don Carter officiating.
Family will receive friends one hour prior at the Church. Burial will follow in the Church cemetery.
