Two rescue vehicles were wrecked and third was damaged as heavy rains brought flash flooding to much of Columbus County Sunday. A Tabor City Rescue vehicle overturned on N.C. 130 en route to a call. When a Lake Waccamaw Rescue Quick Response Vehicle responded, that vehicle also wrecked. A Whiteville Rescue heavy rescue truck was also flooded and trapped at the Go Gas on Madison Street. Multiple Whiteville intersections were also flooded.

The heavy rain closed down the Columbus County Ag Fair for Saturday and caused a delayed opening for Sunday. Crowds are still estimated to have topped recent record setting years. The coastal storm brought several inches of rain to the area Friday through Sunday, leading to some nuisance flooding. A number of minor wrecks were reported on area roads.

The rain didn’t deter dozens of participants in Saturday’s Kevin Conner Memorial Run in Whiteville. The trooper was killed in October 2018 during a traffic stop. The annual run benefits scholarships for Bladen County and Columbus County students going to school for law enforcement.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office brought 1,000 smoke detectors to Chadbourn Friday for distribution to Columbus County fire departments. There were no detectors in the home during an August fire that killed four young sisters.
