
NEWTON GROVE — Hobbton ground up 524 yards rushing to defeat West Columbus Friday night, 42-28.
This game was a stat loverβs dream: Hobbton’s Reginald Thompson ran for 226 yards and four touchdowns on 28 carries while teammate Amir Tate toted the rock for 234 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. DJ Graham was 11-20 passing for 244 yards, had 57 yards rushing, two touchdowns passing, and two rushing in the losing effort for the Vikings.
Hobbton scored early in the first quarter but the Vikings retaliated and went ahead 8-7 with the two-point conversion. The lead went back and forth in the second quarter with each teams scoring. Hobbton scored last before the half to give the Wildcats a 20-16 advantage.
Hobbton extended their lead to 26-16 early in the third quarter. West Columbus kept it close throughout the third with the Vikings only trailing 34-28 at the end of the quarter. Hobbton added a score in the fourth to give the Wildcats a 42-28 advantage. West Columbus failed to score in the fourth, making it 42-28 Hobbton for the final.
Hobbton leads the Carolina Conference with a 4-0 and a 5-3 record for the season. The Wildcats will travel to Lakewood (3-1, 5-3) next Friday for a crucial conference battle between cross-county rivals.
West Columbus falls to 1-4 in the conference and 1-7 on the year. They will cross state lines and face non-conference opponent Green Sea Floyd (0-8) on Oct. 24.
