WILLIAMSTON — The Martin County Gators topped Whiteville in the first round of the 3A playoffs in tennis Monday 5-2. The Gators (4-7) won four singles matches and a double for the win.
Martin County is scheduled to face NCSSM in Durham on Oct. 15.
Whiteville Coach Serena Smith stated after the match “It was a great match which the score does not reflect. Two of the five they won went to a tiebreaker.
“My girls played hard and if you had told me in September we would make the playoffs, I would not have believed it. What my young team has accomplished was icing on the cake.”
Whiteville concluded its season with a 5-10-1 record. Whiteville has a few players going to singles and doubles regionals. Carrie Medford and Allison Arp will represent Whiteviile in the singles regional and the Chloe Thompson/Adisyn Worthington duo will play in the doubles regionals later for the Pack.
