Whiteville Survives Fairmont 42-28

FAIRMONT — Whiteville overcame a fourth quarter deficit and a hungry Fairmont squad Friday night to take the game, 42-28.

The win keeps the Pack all alone atop the Southeastern Conference, now 3-0 to go with their 6-2 overall record.

Things started out great for the Wolfpack as Collin Hooks intercepted a Jamarion Brown pass at the Tornadoes’ 40-yard line. Sabian Shipman ran it in from 15 yards out for the score. Price Wheatley added the extra point to give Whiteville a 7-0 lead with 9:06 left in the first quarter. Fairmont’s Jamarion Brown hit Kamari McNair from 50 yards out to put the Tornadoes on the board, making it 7-6 with 55 seconds left in the half. The PAT failed.

Whiteville extended their lead to 13-6 in the third quarter when Sabian Shipman scored a five -yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion failed for the Wolfpack. With just under five minutes to go in the third, Fairmont took the lead as Brown hit Tariq Leggit in the end zone for a pass and converted the two pointer to make it 14-13.

Whiteville struck back quickly on the next drive when Layton McLean found Corey Faison from seven yards out to make it Whiteville 19-14 with 3:00 left in the third quarter.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Fairmont reclaimed the lead as Omarion Carmichael ran it 53 yards to the house to make it 20-19 Tornadoes. Emanuel Kemp ran a 10-yard touchdown on the next drive and put the Pack back ahead 27-20. McLean hit Kemp for the two-point conversion.

Fairmont would not go away as Brown threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Carmichael and converted the two-point attempt, putting the Tornadoes back on top 28-27. With less than two minutes left in the game, McLean found the end zone from 15 yards out, putting the Wolfpack back on top for good with the two-point conversion 35-28. Fairmont’s following drive stalled at their own 24-yard line. Shipman added a five-yard touchdown and Wheatley kicked the extra point for the final score Whiteville 42-28.

Whiteville will host Red Springs (1-2, 3-5) Friday. Fairmont, who ended their 17-game losing streak last week, falls to 1-2 in the Southeastern Conference and 1-7 on the season. The Tornadoes will travel to South Brunswick (2-1, 5-3) this week.
