Forest Service crews have contained a fire off Big Island Road near Wardtown and N.C. 130, but officials are advising residents to be extremely careful and to avoid outdoor burning right now.
“There is no burn ban, but conditions are prime for a wildfire,” said District Forester Michael Rhodes. “We’re just asking people to please be extremely cautious and have the tools they need to prevent a fire from spreading.”
The Big Island Road fire affected around five acres, Rhodes said. Crews have containment lines around the fire site.
Relative humidities remain extremely low across the state, and significant rainfall is not expected for the next week. The combination of dry air, warm temperatures and little precipitation is expected remain in place for several days.
