LAKE WACCAMAW — East Columbus boys basketball team came out in the season opener looking for a victory against West Bladen. What they got was a buzzsaw as the Knights crushed East Columbus 68-32.
Jackson Pait and Tylik McCall led the Knights with 23 points each. Pait got the Knights rolling in the first quarter putting up 13 points including three 3-pointers to put West Bladen ahead 24-6 after the first quarter. McCall joined the festivities in the second quarter, putting up 17 points before the half to put the Knights ahead 47-19 at intermission.
West Bladen’s smothering defense kept East Columbus off balance in the second half. The Knights press and Pait’s 3-point bombs pushed the lead 56-21 midway through the third quarter, causing a continuous running clock. N.C. High School Athletics Association rules state that a 35-point advantage causes a continuous clock for sportsmanship purposes. The Knights cruised the rest of the game for the 68-32 final.
Jamari Adams-Peterson contributed 11 points in the win for West Bladen. Kevon Stackhouse led East Columbus with 10 points and eight rebounds. The Knights (1-0) face West Columbus in Cerro Gordo on Friday night, and East Columbus (0-1) travels to South Brunswick (1-1).
