Filings Off to Busy Start

Candidate filing for the March primary races got off to a busy start at the Columbus County Board of Elections Monday.

Primary winners go on to the general election in the fall.

Incumbent Democrat Barbara Featherson was the only member of her party to file for any local office. She is running for the District One county commissioner’s seat she has held for four years.

In what is expected to be a tightly-contested sheriff’s race for the Republican nomination, two of the four announced candidates filed Monday. Appointed Sheriff Bill Rogers replaced Jody Greene days after Green was sworn in for second term. Greene was the first Republican sheriff here in decades. Chadbourn Police Chief Ken Elliot also signed up for sheriff.

Incumbent District Six Commissioner Ricky Bullard is facing a challenge from Jeanne McPherson for the District Six Republican nomination. Incumbent Commissioner Scott Floyd is unopposed for the Republican nod for District Seven.

On the state level, Brenden Jones was one of the first to file for office Monday, seeking to retain his seat as State Representative for Columbus and part of Robeson counties. Incumbent Bill Rabon, a native of Fair Bluff, also filed for reelection as State Senator representing District 5, which includes much of Columbus County and Brunswick.

In the court system races, Jess Hill filed for the Republican slot for Clerk of Superior Court, and Jenna Earley for the Republican nomination for District Attorney. Hill has served in the position since 2014. Earley is First Assistant District Attorney under Jon David, who announced last week he will not seek reelection.

Filing ends Dec. 19 for the March 3 primary. Look for updates here on CCN throughout the filing period.
