NWS Says More Winter Weather Possible

While it’s too early to tell what will happen, the National Weather Service today (Monday) said more winter weather may be heading to North Carolina.

Frigid temperatures have led to a two hour delay for county schools and offices on Tuesday (Jan. 27). Wind chills in the single digits are possible tonight and tomorrow morning, and nighttime lows will be in the teens and twenties the rest of the week. Emergency officials are concerned that some runoff may freeze on elevated surfaces tonight.

A “significant coastal storm” could develop when a mass of Canadian air moves south and interacts with a low pressure system Thursday into Saturday, the NWS said this afternoon (Monday).

The actual timing and effects of the storm cannot be determined this far out, since multiple factors are at play. The continued subfreezing temperatures that will dominate this week’s weather will make conditions ripe for another blast of precipitation, but what falls, when and how much cannot be forecast this far out.

“Always be sure of your sources,” Meteorologist Christopher Cawley said. “Don’t trust the weather app on your phone of the splashy scary graphics on social media.

“It’s too early to tell exactly what is going to happen, but we need to keep an eye on things moving forward.”
