Southern Farm Days, plant sales, and book signings, oh my! Columbus County is jam packed full of adventures over the next couple of weekends. Be sure to check back in every Wednesday morning with The Good News, so you don’t miss out on all the great things going on at an event near you.  

Don’t see your organization’s event listed? Let us know if your church, civic group, or association has Easter celebrations, markets, revivals, plays, gatherings, or fundraisers that you want published in The Good News. The Family Birthing Center at Columbus Regional Healthcare System is inviting expectant mothers in their third trimester and their partners to attend birthing classes at the facility. Space is limited, but they will accommodate all interested participants.   

The class will include topics like what to expect during your birth experience, the benefits of breastfeeding and how to be successful, a tour of the center, and a meet and greet with the staff. Refreshments will be served at each session.   

 

The event is free, and each session will run from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Classes are scheduled for the following dates:

  • April 18  
  • May 23  
  • June 13  
  • July 18  
  • Aug. 15  
  • Sept. 19  
  • Oct. 17  
  • Nov. 14  
  • Dec. 12

New Life Community Church will host the ‘Spread the Gospel’ event on March 21 at 5 p.m. There will be live Gospel singing, and sandwiches and water will be available while supplies last. Pastor Charles Cribb will be providing the message.

The Town of Lake Waccamaw welcomed their new fire chief to the area last week. Chase Lancaster brings a strong commitment to public safety, leadership, and service to the community. Welcome Chief Lancaster.  

The Christian Life Center in Fair Bluff will also host a ladies spring conference on March 21 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. A light breakfast and lunch will be served. Speakers will include Ashton S. Cox with “The Lord is my Shepherd: Abiding in His Care,” Tamber Patterson with “Fighting Evil on the Technology Frontlines,” and Angela Huggins will teach a Bible Journaling class.  

There is no charge for the conference, but those interested are asked to RSVP by calling or texting Helen Dotson with your name at 910.499.2191.

As spring approaches, a tiny hero vital to the world will be out and about all over Columbus County. It’s honeybee swarm season, and if you see a group of displaced pollinators, call a local beekeeper to come help relocate the essential buzzy beauties.  

You can contact the Columbus County Beekeepers Association at 910.317.0173 or Waccamaw Apiaries at 910.640.5114 if you see a swarm in need near you.  

There will be more opportunities to shop at the Columbus County Farmers Market this coming year. The market and its vendors will be open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Folks will be set up with produce, breads, spices, jewelry, and everything in between.  

The market can be found at 132 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville.  

Downtown Whiteville will be hosting their first Open-Air Market on March 19 from 4-8 p.m. on the Vineland Station Depot lawn. There will be vendors, fresh flowers, produce, honey, sourdough bread, microgreens, homemade pasta, and more.  

Music in the Alley will also be happening from 7-9 p.m. right beside Colliers Jewelry. The Crenshaw Trucking Band is set to perform. Vineland Station Depot is located at 701 South Madison Street.  

The sixteenth annual Southern Farm Days will be back March 20-22 at the Boys and Girls Home of NC Horse Complex. Columbus County News will be live during the event, and we would love to spotlight your small business.

Lebanon Lodge #207, Chadbourn Lodge #190, and Tabor Lodge #593 will be hosting a veteran and first responder pancake breakfast on March 21 from 8-10 a.m. at 124 Pecan Street in Whiteville. All veterans, first responders, and their families are welcome to attend, share a meal, and help celebrate the spirit of service.  

The Anchorage Camp in Lake Waccamaw will have the Senior Adult Retreat on March 26-28. The guest speaker will be Sammy Frye. A single cottage is $139, and the cost of the couple’s cottage is $189.

Speaking of Lake Waccamaw, the Food Bank will have bagging day on March 26 and distribution day on March 28 for those who would like to volunteer. Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated to keep the ministry going.

The Columbus County Arts Council will host a very special event on March 28 from 3-5 p.m. Join them as they host Columbus County native Dr. Sadie Leder Elder for a book signing and reception of her latest release to the Boopers the Bad Cat series.  

The Adventures of Boopers the Bad Cat, Boopers the Bad Cat Visits Chapel Hill, and Boopers the Bad Cat Goes to Work will be available for purchase, and light refreshments will be served. The council can be found at 822 South Madison Street in Whiteville. 

If you feel like making a trip just over the state line, the Friends of the Green Sea Floyds Library will have a chicken bog, craft fair, and car show on March 28 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. They are also still accepting applications for vendors.  

Those interested in pedaling their wares at the event can download their application by scanning the QR code. The library is located at 5331 Highway 9 in Green Sea, S.C.  

Edgewood Elementary’s Jr. FFA will be taking orders for their fern sale through March 25. The plants will arrive on April 1 just in time for Easter, and you can pick them up at the school, or several of the kids will even deliver them to your door.  

The ferns are $12.50 each, and you can either reach out to the school or contact a member of the Jr. FFA to get yours.

The Whiteville FFA will have their greenhouse grand opening plant sale on Friday, April 3, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the high school. BBQ sandwiches will also be sold to support the WHS FFA scholarships. For more information, follow the Whiteville FFA Facebook page.
