April 28 Baseball Roundup: Pack Tops Stallions; Gators Tied for Conference Lead

WHITEVILLE 3, SOUTH COLUMBUS 1

WHITEVILLE—Nate Merritt pitched a complete six-hit game as the Wolfpack topped South Columbus 3-1 in baseball Tuesday night.

Merritt struck out five batters while pitching seven innings. Briley Tedder had a hit and an RBI while teammate Colin Hooks had two hits for the Wolfpack, who have clinched the Southeastern Conference Championship with a 9-0 conference record and 14-6 on the season.

South Columbus falls to 3-6 in the conference and 9-11 on the year. The two teams will have a rematch at Vinegar Hill on Thursday.

EAST COLUMBUS 13, HOBBTON 3

NEWTON GROVE—East Columbus defeated Hobbton 13-3 on Tuesday to put the Gators in a first place tie with the Wildcats.

Both teams now are 9-2 in the Carolina Conference going into the final contest for both squads. Thomas Tart had a hit and two RBI’s for Hobbton in the loss. East Columbus (14-5) will wrap up its season on Thursday hosting East Bladen (7-4, 10-10). Hobbton (15-4) will travel to Union (0-11, 0-22) for its final regular season contest on Thursday.

The Gators are now tied for the conference lead.

WEST BLADEN 8, SOUTH BRUNSWICK 3

BOILING SPRINGS—West Bladen continued to be local problem for fire departments as the flaming hot Knights won their ninth game in a row, defeating South Brunswick 8-3 on Tuesday night in baseball.

The win also put the Knights in a second-place tie with the Cougars, with both teams sitting at 6-3 in the Southeastern Conference. Aiden Trinidad and Wes Hilburn drove in two runs each to lead West Bladen at the plate. The Knights (17-6) will face South Brunswick (14-9) in a rematch in Dublin on Thursday to decide second place in the conference.

ELIZABETHTOWN—Zack Scholar knocked in two runs on two hits as East Bladen downed Lakewood 7-3 in baseball on Tuesday night.

Tyler Eason pitched six innings, striking out 10 and not allowing an earned run to push the Eagles to 7-4 in the Carolina Conference and 10-10 on the year. East Bladen is currently in a tie with North Duplin (7-4, 8-6) going into its last regular season contest at East Columbus (9-2, 14-5) on Thursday. Lakewood (3-8, 6-14) will host North Duplin on April 30.

NORTH DUPLIN 4, WEST COLUMBUS 2

CALYPSO—Holden Williams struck out five on his way to a complete game as the Rebels of North Duplin defeated West Columbus 4-2 in Baseball on Tuesday night.

The Rebels now sit in a second-place tie with East Bladen in the Carolina Conference, both at 7-4. North Duplin (8-6) will travel to Lakewood (3-8, 6-14) on Thursday. West Columbus (4-8, 7-14) has completed the regular season and await the 2A playoff brackets to be announced this weekend to see who their opponent will be in the post season.
