If you’re looking for plants to purchase for the spring, there will be plenty of opportunities to buy them for a good cause at local educational institutions throughout Columbus County. Southeastern Community College will be the first to kick off the perennial market on April 2 from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at the Cartrette Building.  

Browse a variety of plants grown by SCC students and find the perfect flowers, greenery, and garden favorites to decorate your home. The annual sale gives students hands-on experience growing and caring for the plants while preparing for horticulture careers.

Speaking of the greenhouse, Mini Rams got the opportunity to tour the facility last week. They explored the world of plants with instructor Dawn Hinshaw, listened to a story, and got a glimpse of what it’s like to be an SCC student.    

The Whiteville FFA will have their greenhouse grand opening plant sale on Friday, April 3, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the high school. BBQ sandwiches will also be sold to support the WHS FFA scholarships. For more information, follow the Whiteville FFA Facebook page.  

Whiteville Police Department will be hosting a blood drive on April 8 from 12:30-5:30 p.m. with the American Red Cross at Vineland Station Depot. Donating blood is a simple way to make a lifesaving difference in your community.

The Greater Tabor City Chamber of Commerce still has non-food vendor spots available for their 2026 Spring has Sprung Festival on April 4. Drop by the chamber office at103D East Fifth Street to grab yours today.  

 This year’s festival will include a community yard sale at the Garrell Depot, a cruise-in car show, live music, food, a kids zone, Flimsy the Clown, and food and craft vendors. For more info, call 910.840.0292. 

 East Columbus High School FFA will also have a plant sale on April 11 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Lantana, Verbena, Marigolds, squash, zukes, cantaloupes, Spider plants, Geraniums, peppers, cukes, tomatoes, Begonias, watermelon, sweet potatoes vines, and hanging baskets are all up for grabs.  

Save your appetite for breakfast because sausage dogs will also be available for purchase while you shop. East Columbus is located at 32 Gator Lane in Lake Waccamaw.  

The Fair Bluff Senior Center will be hosting their very first Barn Quilting class on April 7 and 9. The beginner-friendly class will be led by Deanna’s Delightful Barn Quilting Designs. Attendees can create their very own vibrant, hand-crafted, and unique piece of art for their home.  

All materials will be provided, but there will be a fee for those upsizing their boards. For more information, call Summer at 910.871.0001.  

 The Columbus County Community Farmers Market will have their Spring Plant Swap on April 11. You can welcome in spring by swapping or buying plants and flowers for your home or garden at the event. While you’re there, be sure to check out an array of vendors, crafters, bakers, and artisans at the market.  

Jams, jellies, breads, eggs, local produce, handcrafted products, baked goods, and jewelry are among the big selection of merchandise available. The market is open every Saturday from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. and every Tuesday and Thursday from 3-7 p.m. at 132 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville. Follow them on Facebook for a full list of events going on throughout the year.  

The Veterans Memorial Park of America will have their third annual Thunder at the Park car, truck, and bike show on April 11. Registration will be from 9-11 a.m. and show time from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.  

Registration can be done early online at www.veteransmemorialparkofamerica.com for $20, and the cost day of show will be $25. All proceeds will go directly to the park located at 6354 James B. White Highway South in Whiteville.  

Columbus County Parks and Recreation will also be sponsoring a blood drive on April 13 from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. in the Columbus County Library Multipurpose Room.

You can scan the QR code on the flyer to make an appointment or just show up at 407 J.K. Powell Boulevard on the day of the event to participate.  

 

 Downtown Whiteville will be hosting the Open-Air Market every other Thursday of the month from 4-8 p.m. beginning April 16 on the Vineland Station Depot lawn. There will be vendors, fresh flowers, produce, honey, sourdough bread, microgreens, homemade pasta, and more.

While clearing a structure fire last week in Lake Waccamaw, Chief Lancaster, Assistant Chief Benton, and EMS Chief King noticed a grill for sale at the Master’s Closet Thrift Store. Instead of letting the gentleman purchase the item, the store donated the grill to the department instead. The station took to Facebook to show their appreciation to the store for their community support.  

Abundant Life Assembly of God will be having a women’s night of worship on April 18 beginning at 6 p.m. All ladies are invited to attend an evening filled with worship, prayer, and inspiration. The church can be found at 5384 James B. White Highway South in Whiteville.
