The Good News April 8-14, 2026

It’s time to get outside, and there are plenty of activities to keep you and your family busy this weekend in Columbus County. Hang out at the Farmers Market, visit the Veterans Memorial Park of America for their car show, adopt a fur baby, and Swing Into Spring with the Columbus County Partnership for Children. Don’t miss a beat with this week’s edition of The Good News.

The Columbus County Health Department will be having a food drive tomorrow, April 9, at 11 a.m. This is a great opportunity to pick up free food for you and your family, connect with health department staff, and discover other community resources.  

No registration is required. CCHD is located at 304 Jefferson Street in Whiteville. 

The Columbus County Beekeepers Association will have the monthly meeting and Easter potluck dinner on Thursday, April 9, at 6:30 p.m. Bring a covered dish to share with the group and catch with other beekeepers before the spring flow finally hits. The association will also be selling raffle tickets to win Nucleus colony for those interested in expanding their hives.  

Whether you’re a seasoned keeper or just curious about bees, join them for the meeting at 45 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville.  

The Lake Waccamaw Woman’s Club will be having a Mexican Fiesta fundraiser and dinner on April 10 at 6 p.m. at the Honey Hill Hunting Preserve. Special raffles will also take place throughout the evening.  

Tickets are $25 each, and all monies will go to the club’s scholarship fund. Those interested can purchase your ticket at the Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum or with any club member.  

East Columbus High School FFA will also have a plant sale on April 11 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Lantana, Verbena, Marigolds, squash, zukes, cantaloupes, Spider plants, Geraniums, peppers, cukes, tomatoes, Begonias, watermelon, sweet potatoes vines, and hanging baskets are all up for grabs.  

Save your appetite for breakfast because sausage dogs will also be available for purchase while you shop. East Columbus is located at 32 Gator Lane in Lake Waccamaw.  

The Columbus County Community Farmers Market will have their Spring Plant Swap on April 11. You can welcome in spring by swapping or buying plants and flowers for your home or garden at the event. While you’re there, be sure to check out an array of vendors, crafters, bakers, and artisans at the market.  

 Jams, jellies, breads, eggs, local produce, handcrafted products, baked goods, and jewelry are among the big selection of merchandise available. The market is open every Saturday from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. and every Tuesday and Thursday from 3-7 p.m. at 132 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville. Follow them on Facebook for a full list of events going on throughout the year.  

The Veterans Memorial Park of America will have their third annual Thunder at the Park car, truck, and bike show on April 11. Registration will be from 9-11 a.m. and show time from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.  

 Registration can be done early online at www.veteransmemorialparkofamerica.com for $20, and the cost day of show will be $25. All proceeds will go directly to the park located at 6354 James B. White Highway South in Whiteville. 

Join the Columbus County Partnership for Children in celebration of NAEYC Week of the Young Child on April 11 for Swing Into Spring. The gathering is free for children six-year-old and younger and their families.  

There will be pizza, Kona Ice, raffles, a bubble garden, face painting, games, information booths, and appearances by Spiderman and Michael Jackson. The event will be held at the fitness park located at 131 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville.  

If a short trip over the county line all in the name of animals is something that you are interested in, Brunswick County Animal Protective Services will be hosting their Partners in Paws event on April 11 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the facility located at 429 Green Swamp Road in Supply. 

Find your new furry best friend with organizations like Hamilton’s Healing Hearts Inc., Adopt-An-Angel, Fix A Friend Spay/Neuter Clinic, Hart-to-Heart Rescue, Carolina Poodle Rescue, and many more. Columbus County Parks and Recreation will also be sponsoring a blood drive on April 13 from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. in the Columbus County Library Multipurpose Room. You can scan the QR code on the flyer to make an appointment or just show up at 407 J.K. Powell Boulevard on the day of the event to participate.  

 Downtown Whiteville will be hosting the Open-Air Market every other Thursday of the month from 4-8 p.m. beginning April 16 on the Vineland Station Depot lawn. There will be vendors, fresh flowers, produce, honey, sourdough bread, microgreens, homemade pasta, and more. 

Abundant Life Assembly of God will be having a women’s night of worship on April 18 beginning at 6 p.m. All ladies are invited to attend an evening filled with worship, prayer, and inspiration. The church can be found at 5384 James B. White Highway South in Whiteville.  

The Fair Bluff Chamber of Commerce is looking for competition cooks for their fifteenth annual BBQ on the Bluff on April 24-25. Come out and show off your fine dining outdoor cooking skills.  

Prizes include a trophy and $500 for first place, a trophy and $300 for second place, and third place will receive a trophy and $150.

Bladen County Public Library will be hosting the ‘Statewide Star Party’ on Friday, April 24, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for children and their families. Attendees will get hands-on experience with a telescope to view the evening sky and learn about the wonders of the solar system.  

Registration is required for the event, and those interested can call 910.862.6990 to sign up. The address for the star party will be the Brown’s Creek Bike Trail located at 1910 East Broad Street in Elizabethtown.
