Staying Alive: Last Minute WHS Homerun Ties Championship

Whiteville 5, Midway 4

SPIVEY’S CORNER—Whiteville forced a home Game 3 for tonight in the 3A Eastern Championship series as the Wolfpack defeated Midway 5-4 in the second game of the Eastern Conference title game.

In extra innings, the Pack’s Layton McLean pelted a homerun to put Whiteville over Midway 5-4 to force a Game 3. The eighth inning shot put Whiteville in a game three match in Legion Stadium for a chance to go to the state championship – something the Wolfpack hasn’t done since 2018.

Layton McLean’s brother Luke, who came in on the top of the third inning, pitched six scoreless innings for the win plus four strikeouts and only three hits.

Luke McLean, Colin Hooks, and Jake Odham produced two hits for the winners.

Game 3 is scheduled for tonight (Saturday) at 7 p.m. at Legion Field at Whiteville for a chance to the 3A State Championship Series.

Midway lost in the 2A Eastern Finals last year. Whiteville lost in the 2A Eastern Title series 2-1 in 2024.
