Here’s today’s Bottom Line

Bermuda high pressure remains locked in place offshore through the entire work week. Abundant tropical moisture is being pumped northward.

Science — There are multiple ways of measuring atmospheric moisture, including humidity, dewpoint, and precipitable water. Precipitable water (PWAT) is by far the best measure of moisture available. A PWAT of 2 inches means that if we took that “piece” of atmosphere and immediately rained all the moisture from it, 2 inches of rain would accumulate. PWAT values greater than 1.5″ are significant.

As you can see, the atmosphere is juiced for Memorial Day. The modeling is consistent through the entire week.

Sea-breeze showers and thunderstorms will be triggered every afternoon. The showers and storms could be enhanced by weak “disturbances” being pinwheeled northward in the tropical flow from the Bermuda high pressure ridge. This creates a very favorable environment for abundant rainfall.

This rainfall comes on top of what has occurred Friday and Saturday. The chart below is the estimated rainfall totals based on Doppler radar data.

Portions of Robeson and Bladen counties have had significant rainfall, while other places have had very little. This will continue to be the rule through the entire week where some areas will get dumped and other areas get only trace amounts.

On AVERAGE though, rainfall totals could be in the 2-4 inch range through the coming week.

Even THIS is NOT a drought buster… but will certainly put a dent in things.
