Tabor Talk for May 13

By Cynthia Stephens Nelson

GTCOC

If you have never been to an Arts Department production at South Columbus High School, you are missing out on something amazing.

Each of my four children graduated from South Columbus High School, so I have had the opportunity to attend many school events from sports to art shows to choral and band performances, and musical/theater productions, and more through the years.

So many times folks say there is nothing to do around here.  As a citizen of Tabor City and as the executive vice president of the GTC Chamber of Commerce, I can say that could not be farther from reality. Various civic organizations, schools, recreational sports, churches, etc. have events going on all year long. Just read this newspaper weekly, read the digital information signs, look at the flyers around town, and you will find lots to do.  Always know that you can give us a call at 910.377.3012 or 910.840.0292 and we will help inform you all we can.  The Tabor City Visitor Center stands ready to assist also. Call 910.653.9712.

Currently, I have a grandson who is a rising senior at South Columbus High School.  He was the voice of Audrey II in their recent musical production of “Little Shop of Horrors”.  Of course, I attended.  The talent of the entire cast blew me away.

Y’all, the Greater Tabor City area has phenomenal talent.  There is no shortage of talent in Columbus County.  We encourage you to support the various school functions as often as you can.  Our children and young adults would love to know their community, countywide, supports them.

Thank you to everyone who bought a Pork Bog plate on May 1. Your support was so appreciated.

Our 22nd Annual Bass Tournament was recently held at Lake Tabor.  With 24 boats and 32 fishermen, it was a success.  Look for a photo of the winners, with names, elsewhere in this edition of the Tabor-Loris Tribune.  Thanks for supporting this event.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 27, we are assisting the Veterans Memorial Park as they bring the “Freedom Fest – Celebrating 250 Years Parade” to Tabor City. Entry forms may be picked up and returned to the Greater Tabor City Chamber of Commerce (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9:30am-2:30pm).  A donation of $25 to enter is requested and may be paid via check or it may be sent via Venmo to VMPA-2013. For more information, please call Angela Norris of Veterans Memorial Park at 910.840.3848. Note: Forms may also be dropped off at the Veterans Memorial Park.

Let’s keep in mind that America’s 250th Birthday Celebration — Columbus County Fireworks Style is getting closer.  Save this Very Important Date of Saturday, the Fourth of July.  We are still accepting donations and sponsorships!  It’s going to be a celebration you will not want to miss!

As always, we need more event volunteers.  Please call us at 910.377.3012 if you are interested and willing to put in some time and effort. We work hard, but it is very rewarding.
