Just when you thought spring events were slowing down, May comes in with a wind-up and a pitch to throw us right back into the swing of things. There is something for teens, adults, senior citizens, fishermen, retirees, and vets to enjoy all over the county. We can’t wait to see what’s next.

The Diaper Bank of North Carolina will be having their Essentials Hub on Thursday, May 7, from 12-1:30 p.m. at the Whiteville Senior Center. They will be giving away free incontinence supplies to residents in Columbus County.  

This is a first come, first serve service. Please remember to bring your own bags. The center’s address is 827 Washington Street in Whiteville.  

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will have their ‘Air it Out: Use Your Voice’ Teen Science Cafe tomorrow, May 7, from 6-7 p.m. The gathering is an educational empowerment-focused program that connects young people with real-world advocacy through the lens of air-quality issue in North Carolina.  

The session will be led by Deborah Effon, a member of the N.C. Air Awareness Team, who works across the state teaching students about air quality and its impact on public health.  

Food will be provided at the cafe. The museum can be found at 415 South Madison Street in Whiteville.  

If you enjoyed all the buzz going on in April, then Tabor City has a big surprise in store for May. On May 7, Julio and the Saltines will be giving a free show at the Garrell Depot from 6-8 p.m.  

Bring your favorite lounge chair, grab some food and refreshments from the food trucks, and move and groove to the sounds of spring and summer. This family-friendly event is for everyone.  The depot’s address is 105 Railroad Street in Tabor City. 

The Columbus County Health Department will have a free food drive tomorrow, May 7, at 11 a.m. This is a great opportunity for folks to pick up free food for their families, connect will department staff, and meet community members.  

No registration is required for the drive. The health department can be found at 304 Jefferson Street in Whiteville.  

The Encounter Crusade will have a prayer gathering on Thursday, May 7, at 7 p.m. at Crossroads Church. They will be gathering to pray about the upcoming crusade, deliver a message focused on “Praying for Your One,” and have Praise and Worship music at the event.  

Come ready to seek God at 87 Southwood Road in Whiteville.   

The Columbus County Community Farmers Market has new hours of operation. The facility will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-7 p.m. and every Saturday from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Come shop fresh and local and support vendors and farmers in our community.  

The market has fresh produce, farm-fresh eggs, homemade breads, jams and jellies, local honey, fresh juices, handmade jewelry, custom tumblers, crafts, games for all ages, live music, and so much more. This Saturday, May 9, the day will include a Cruise In Car Show. It is located at 132 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville.  

The Greater Tabor City Chamber of Commerce will have their annual bass tournament at Lake Tabor on May 9. Registration will be at 5 a.m., blast off is at 6 a.m., and the weigh-in will be at 12 p.m.  

Cash prizes include $250 and a trophy for first place, $175 for second place, and $100 for third. The ‘Big Fish’ will be determined by the number of participating entries.  A meal will be provided for all fishermen. Call 910.377.3012 to pre-register.   

Join the Community Art Journey in Lake Waccamaw each week to create, inspire, and connect with other artists. Open studio hours are every Wednesday from 1-3 p.m., pastel painting classes are every Thursday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. with Beth Olson, and Barn Quilt painting is open to individuals and small groups per your availability.  

A two-part session Beginning Cross Stitch class will be held with part one on Friday, May 15 or Sunday, May 17, and the second portion is planned for Sunday, June 7. The studio is located at 112F Hillcrest Plaza at the Lake.  

The Sheepdog Foundation is raising funds to put up a 100-foot chain link fence at their Hard Charger youth clubhouse in Whiteville. The center is located downtown in an extremely busy area, and the fence is needed to protect the children while they are outdoors and to deter individuals from loitering and trespassing on the property.  

Any donation of any amount is appreciated and will greatly benefit the program. The cost of the installation is $2,000, and you can donate directly to the fund at www.sheepdogfdn.com/donations 

Bolton Senior Center will have a jelly making class on Friday, May 15, at 1 p.m. The hands-on class will teach the basics of jelly making while using fresh ingredients. You get to make your own batch to take home and learn tips, tricks, and recipes in great company.  

Space is limited, so drop by the center located at 15354 Sam Potts Highway to reserve your spot. All supplies will be provided.  

The Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum will have their annual Lunch at the Lake fundraiser at Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church on May 15 at 11:30 a.m. There will be raffles, door prizes, a best hat contest, and a best vest contest.  

Tickets are $25 per person, and you can purchase yours at the depot Wednesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. or by calling 910.770.6017. The church can be found at 506 Lake Shore Drive, and the museum is located at 203 Flemington Drive.  

Lower Cape Fear LifeCare’s Angel House in Whiteville needs donations for their Family Kitchen at the facility. These items allow for families staying with loved ones to be able to have snacks and meals during their visit.  

The list includes: 

  • Canned sodas- especially Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, and Sun Drop 
  • Bottled Water 
  • Individual bags of chips 
  • Lance crackers 
  • K-cups for Keurig coffee maker 
  • Coffee creamer 
  • Foam plates 
  • Paper towels 
  • Plastic spoons and forks

Columbus County Schools will have a job fair on Saturday, May 16, at the CCS Central Services building from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. This event offers job seekers the opportunity to meet with recruiters, explore available positions, and learn more about careers within the district.

The We Care Ministry in Clarkton has announced their new dates and time for their community food distribution. The next open days are May 19 and June 2. The event is a first come, first serve drive thru service only, and you are asked to please remain in your vehicle. Everyone is welcome.  

Each food bank will be held at 2 p.m. at the Pierce Chapel Community Building located at 595 Porterville School Road in Clarkton. For questions, call 910.508.6352 or 910.998.2856. 

The Veterans Memorial Park of America will be holding their Memorial Day ceremony and annual veterans luncheon on May 22 at 11 a.m. The meal is free to vets, but those who would like to attend must preregister by May 15.

Lakeside worship services will begin Memorial Day Sunday and will run every weekend through Labor Day Sunday starting on May 24. The services are held at 9 a.m. at the Lake Waccamaw Sailing Club. Located at 3100 Canal Cove Road. A list of speakers and singers will be announced soon.  

Iron Hill Baptist Church will be having a fish fry fundraiser on May 29 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Plates are $10 each and will include a catfish fillet, sweet potatoes, homemade cole slaw, bread, and a dessert.
