Here’s today’s Bottom Line
We’ll have warm, breezy, and humid conditions today to kick off the work week. A fairly strong cold front for this time of year will drop southeast over the area this afternoon, and this will bring the threat for showers and thunderstorms.
The modeling has been very consistent with this afternoon’s frontal passage. I don’t think we’ll have much, if any, convective activity through the morning hours, and we may get enough sunshine to destabilize the atmosphere pretty well. Temps will rise well into the 80s and there will likely be plenty of moisture available. The source of lift we need will be colliding parcels of air along the frontal boundary (known as “convergence”). All of this comes together and we’re primed for thunderstorms.
We have a “marginal risk” (level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms with the frontal passage. Damaging wind gusts will be the biggest concern, but that really should be isolated in nature.
Showers and thunderstorms should be scattered overall. Not everyone will see rainfall today, but I believe there will be a decent coverage, especially in the 3 PM to 9 PM timeframe.
Rainfall amounts may vary significantly across the area. Places receiving heavier thunderstorms could pick up 1+ inch of rainfall, while others, like I said, get nothing at all.
High pressure then builds in and brings delightful weather for Tuesday and Wednesday… and then the next cold front whisks over the area late Wednesday night. There will be the threat for showers and thunderstorms during the overnight hours, but this will likely be a quick hit, leaving us with plenty of sunshine on Thursday.
Sunny and dry conditions persist into the weekend with temperatures taking the turn toward summertime as we’ll be at or above 90 degrees over the weekend.
