The Whiteville Wolfpack will begin their quest to return to the state championship tonight.
The Pack will face Midway for the 3A Eastern Championship in a best of three game series starting at Legion Stadium tonight at 7 p.m. The Wolfpack has not won the eastern title since 2018 when they won back-to-back on their way to consecutive titles.
The Pack (18-6) came into the postseason as the number four seed. They will be led by Nate Merritt on the mound and his brother Luke will be coming in relief.
Briley Tedder, Jake Odham, and Colin Hooks have been solid with the bat all season. Ty’Lae Rose and Jaquan McKinnis have sparked the Wolfpack with needed offence in the post season. Whiteville ‘s pitching from the McLean brothers is going to be a key item for this series.
Midway (19-7) is coming in with a chip on its shoulder.
They lost in the 2A Eastern Championship last year, and want to make it to the State Championship. The Raiders will be looking to Wesley Tew to lead them there.
Tew is boasting a .406 batting average and has knocked six balls out the park. Teammate Wyatt Scott has drove in 28 runs to go with his 25 runs scored. Cameron Register will probably take the mound for the Raiders in Game 1. Register sports a 3.47 ERA with 28 strikeouts on the season.
Whiteville will host the first game of the three-game-series at 7 p.m. at Legion Field. Game 2 is at Spivey’s Corner on Thursday at 7 p.m. Game 3 will return to Whiteville at 7 p.m. on Friday to decide the series if necessary.
