Airlink Aborts Mission Due to Laser

An AirLink helicopter crew was briefly blinded by someone tracking the helicopter with a laser during a medical mission Thursday.

The helicopter crew reported that around 11:43 p.m., someone shone a blue laser at the aircraft, illuminating the cockpit “and causing temporary visual impairment” to the crew. The pilot reported that the laser continued tracking the helicopter for around a minute before the flight was aborted and the helicopter returned to the helipad at Columbus Regional.

No injuries were reported.

Deputies searched the area where the air crew said the laser originated, and spoke with a resident of the area. No suspects have been identified, and the incident is under investigation.

Shining lasers at aircraft is a federal crime. Lasers can cause temporary or permanent eye damage, potentially leading to aircraft crashes.
