Deputies charged a China Grove man with drug and firearm offenses today (Aug. 13) after he allegedly had marijuana and an illegally possessed handgun at Southeastern Community College.
Chrysler Chance Chavis, 18, was released on a $10,000 secured bond. He was charged with carrying a concealed handgun, possession of a firearm on school grounds, and manufacture, sale, and distribution of marijuana within 1,000 feet of a school.
Chavez allegedly was carrying a concealed 9mm handgun when he was arrested with a quantity of marijuana, according to a warrant. State law prohibits anyone under 21 from carrying a handgun.
His address was listed as 1955 Old Stake Rd., Chadbourn. The home is located a short distance from 2013 Old Stake Rd., where Autumn Spivey, 16, died in a drive-by shooting in January. Three men have been arrested in that case.
Chavis was a student at the Career and College Academy, which is located on the Southeastern Community College campus but is run by the county schools.
A booking photo was not immediately available for Chavis.
