Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies are searching for a suspect who allegedly shot a deputy on Prosper Road and fled the scene this morning.
The assault occurred in the Delco area after a traffic stop, according to radio traffic and Sheriff Bill Rogers. Deputies and troopers from Columbus are being assisted by Bladen, Brunswick, New Hanover and Robeson counties.
In a press release moments ago, Rogers confirmed that the deputy was shot and is hospitalized.
“A deputy sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment,” the release said.
”Residents are encouraged to secure their property and remain vigilant until this situation has been resolved. If you observe any suspicious activity, please call 911 immediately.”
Expect a large law enforcement presence in the area while in the incident remains active, Rogers said.
