A strong line of unstable weather caused by Hurricane Isaias brought one confirmed tornado to the area Sunday. And may have spawned others.
The confirmed tornado toppled a large tree in the Sandyfield area, blocking Kennedy Store Road and others for a time. Acme=Delco-Riegelwood Firefighters cleared the tree on Kennedy Store. An unconfirmed tornado caused damage to outbuildings at the Roy McPherson farm in Clarendon. The National Weather Service is surveying damage in Clarendon and other locations today.
Confirmed tornados hit in Fayetteville and Moore County, as well as near the town of Atkinson in Pender and Wallace in Duplin. No injuries were reported.
The twisters spun off from unstable air offshore and the outer bands of Isaias as it crossed central and western North Carolina Sunday morning, the NWS said.
While some area saw significant rainfall, most had no problems with flash flooding.
“We had nothing unusual,” said David Wise, Chadbourn Town Manager. “We did well.”
Whiteville Emergency Services Director Hal Lowder said city crews were hard at work Friday to ensure outfalls were clear. They also knocked out several beaver dams along Soules Swamp and Mollies Branch.
“It looks like we had just the rain that we needed,” Lowder said Sunday. “We haven’t had any problems.”
Isaias came ashore along the Gulf Coast and made its way toward the Ohio River Valley. Some areas of western North Carolina that are still recovering from Hurricane Helene saw significant flooding, with ten or more inches of rain in a few hours.
