Flags fly at Lake Waccamaw

Mitch Simmons, Gray Rogers, Charlotte and Mike Hollingsworth, and Mike Fishburn take a moment while erecting the dozens of flags along Flemington Drive Thursday.

A league of extraordinary gentleman and one gentle woman got up bright and early Thursday morning to put up the flags along Flemington Drive in Lake Waccamaw.

The crew is headed by Mike Hollingsworth and his wife Charlotte Hollingsworth, and includes Mitch Simmons, Mike Fishburn, and Gray Rogers. These folks are the people responsible for the displays put up each patriotic holiday near the Town Hall and Fire Department.

The flags are erected for Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Independence Day, and other holidays. The flags are on display this week for Patriot’s Day, the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The volunteers raise the flags every patriotic holiday to remind Lake Waccamaw residents and visitors about the price of freedom.
The flags stretch from beyond the Depot Museum to Town Hall.

An all-day event will take place this coming Saturday at Elizabeth Brinkley Park in Lake Waccamaw. The Freedom Isn’t Free observance begins at 8 a.m. and includes a 5K run and a motorcycle run. A parade will take place at 1 p.m., followed by Native Dancers, and musical entertainers. There will be face painting, and a kids center for the little one to enjoy. A ceremony will take place in the evening with guest speakers, and the lighting of luminaries to end the day.

All proceeds from the event will go to the construction and installation of the 9/11 Memorial at the Never Forget Garden at the Veterans Memorial Park of America.  Students from the Columbus College and Career Academy masonry department will participate in the memorial’s construction.

Mike Hollingsworth is on the committee for the 9/11 even, as well as leading the effort to fly the flags on Flemington.

“I hope we have a big turnout for this. Angela Norris has really worked hard to plan it,” Hollingsworth said.
