RJ Corman Railroad was one of the 17 short line railroads awarded grants this week in the Department of Transportation Freight Rail and Rail Crossing Safety Improvement program (FRRCSI).

Corman was awarded $1 million for new track materials, surfacing, new crossties and grade improvements in Columbus County.

The DOT awarded $16.7 million in matching grant funds for infrastructure and safety improvement across the state. The FRRCSI provides funding for rail infrastructure, safety and performance throughout the state, according to a DOT press release.

The projects will provide more than $32 million in rail infrastructure improvements statewide. Projects awarded funding and their estimated total costs, including railroad matching funds.
Corman owns the line between Whiteville and South Carolina, and has an operations center in Chadbourn.
