The Columbus County Beekeepers are partnering with the North Cooperative Extension to a host a beginner beekeeper class. The seminar will begin on Friday and run from 6 p.m.- 9 p.m., continue on into Saturday from 8:30 a.m.- 5 p.m., and conclude on Sunday from 1 p.m.- 5 p.m.
The weekend long course will cover the basics including where to purchase honey bees, types of hives, and the equipment needed for beekeeping. Students will learn how to setup hives and how to put bees into their new habitat.
“Beekeeping for Dummies” is the book suggested for the course. The fee to participate is $50 and goes towards one-year memberships to the Columbus County Beekeepers and the North Carolina State Beekeepers Association. The money will be collected on the first night of class. A NVSBA Certified Beekeeper test will be given on Sunday afternoon, but attendees are not required to take it. A field day will be scheduled later after the weather warms up.
Those who wish to take the seminar are asked to R.S.V.P. by Feb. 2 at 4 p.m. Folks are asked to arrive by 5:30 p.m. on Friday for registration at the N.C.
