Traffic was tangled for more than an hour Sunday after a Durham man allegedly opened fire on another motorist near Chadbourn.
The sheriff’s office reported that Keyontae Dashawn Datcher, 21, was initially held under a $16,000 secured bond on charges of firing into a moving vehicle, possession of a firearm by a felon, resisting an officer, hit and run, communicating threats and fleeing to elude arrest. He listed his address as 30 Prestwick Place, Durham on jail documents.
The incident began just before noon. The sheriff’s office reported that the victims, Everett Mattocks Jr. and Cecelia Williams, called 911 after they were shot at by Datcher in the vicinity of Joe Brown Highway South in Chadbourn. Chadbourn Police intercepted the suspect’s vehicle, containing Datcher and a female, and began a pursuit.
Datcher lost control and hit a light pole in downtown Chadbourn town limits, then jumped and ran from the vehicle. He was taken into custody by CPD.
The victims were not injured in the shooting, according to the report. Traffic was slowed down as far as U.S. 74, and parts of Brown Street downtown were detoured while the wreck was cleared and the investigation completed.
It was the second chase in Chadbourn in less than a week. On Thursday, A woman was charged after allegedly hitting two deputies’ cruisers on Andrew Jackson Highway.
Chelsea Lois Murray, 27, of Rock Hill, S.C., was allegedly fleeing a traffic stop by Chadbourn Police Lieutenant Ken Elliot when she hit the deputies. No injuries were reported. Murray was placed under $90,000 secured bond, charged with assault with a deadly weapon against a government official, damage to government property, fleeing to elude arrest, and simple possession of marijuana.
