A teenager was allegedly shot to death by his father Friday, according to the sheriff’s office.
Matthew Hall Mercer is under no bond on a single count of first degree murder, Sheriff Bill Rogers said. He is charged in the shooting death of his son Brady.
Deputies were called to the home near Chadbourn Friday night. Rogers said they found Mercer and his deceased son at the scene.
Mercer had recently won custody of the youth from his mother, family members said in a social media post. He has a first appearance in Columbus County Superior Court on Monday.
The death is the 11th homicide investigated in the county this year.
