The sheriff’s office and other agencies joined forces March 14 for a major checking station at Haynes Lennon Highway and Princess Ann Road near Chadbourn, netting 31 violations in three hours.
“The goal of this enforcement effort was to ensure compliance with motor vehicle codes and to reduce motor vehicle accidents, injuries, and death associated with impaired driving,” Columbus County Sheriff Bill Rogers said in a press release.
Police from Tabor City, Lumberton and Chadbourn joined the Columbus and Brunswick sheriff’s offices and the N.C. Highway Patrol for the checkpoint. The N.C. Dept. of Health and Human Services Blood Alcohol Testing (BAT) bus was also on hand to allow officers to fill,out paperwork and book suspects in front of a magistrate.
Among the violations were four drug related citations, five registration violations, seven seatbelt violations, five drivers without valid licenses, one driver with a revoked license, and nine other citations. One fugitive was also arrested.
Rogers expressed his appreciation for the assistance of the other agencies.
