News Briefs for January 20, 2025

A mother and four children died Sunday in a car crash in Bladen County. The 4:00 p.m. wreck occurred on N.C. 20 near Purdie Hall Road, the Highway Patrol said. The children ranged in age from six to 16 years old.

 

Columbus County Commissioners Tuesday will hear a request to transfer 911 operations under the sheriff’s office.  The request comes after several fire chiefs asked the sheriff’s office to take over the department, citing problems with leadership.

 

Columbus County and all of Southeastern North Carolina is under a Winter Storm WATCH. Snowfall totals look like they might be lower than originally forecast, but black ice is still a potential problem on area roadways for the next three days. We will see DANGEROUSLY cold temperatures, with some single digit wind chills, as well as winter precipitation of some kind through Thursday.

Local and state emergency officials are gearing up for a worst case scenario. Brine trucks are being prepared for deployment on major area highways. Heating fuel dealers reported that they are seeing a flurry of customers preparing for the frigid temperatures.
