Kyla Mae Benton has been discharged from UNC Children’s Hospital.
The five year old girl was seriously injured Jan. 6 in a head-on collision that killed her mother, Misty Cribb, and injured her stepbrother Maddox Zimmerman.
Kyla was transferred from New Hanover to Chapel Hill the day of the crash, with severe injuries to her head and neck. She has undergone several surgeries and wears a HALO suspension system while she heals.
Myla’s aunt Ashlee Roby posted on Facebook today (Friday) that Kyla Mae came home Thursday night.
“Since the last correction to her HALO vet and having her feeding tube removed, and being able to eat some normal foods, our girl has had some outstanding improvements,” Roby wrote.
Kyla will continue rehabilitation and weekly doctor visits at UNC Hospital, until the HALO device is removed, Roby wrote.
“She is not completely recovered or healed, but her healing came to a point in the process where she could come home and continue to receive treatment,” Roby wrote.
The little girl will continue to require round the clock care, Roby said, until the fluid on her brain has dissipated.
The family has set up a GoFundMe for Kyla at https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-kyla-maes-healing-journey. Her father Eddie will be out of work while she heals, Roby said, and the funds will go to help with living expenses and bills.
“Our family is forever grateful and thankful for everything that everyone has done for Kyla, Eddie, and the rest of us,” Roby said. “We truly could not have made it this far without your love, support, and prayers. We hope one day we can return this favor to you.”
