There are several types of food that I love, but only a few that I crave; tacos and wings are always at the top of my list. So today I am sharing with you my opinion on San Jose Mexican Restaurant on Madison Street in Whiteville.
If last week’s review was easy, this one is a breeze, as I have been eating with the folks at San Jose since they came to the Whiteville area in the early 2000’s. I have watched this establishment go through several management and decor changes and yet always having solid food quality. I bet I can count less than five times that I have had something go weird, as things do from time to time.
The Menu: They are not serving the heavier, over-sauced, often greasy Mexican offerings that you find from time to time. San Jose has stayed very true to its lighter, Tex-Mex grill versions of tacos, burritos, fajitas, and combo plates. They also offer several dishes like Pollo Loco and Loco Pina, both chicken dishes with out of pocket veggies and fruit pairings.
An assortment of appetizers, steak and seafood entrees, as well as salads and vegetable based entre’s are included to keep everyone happy. Drinks are served from a full cantina bar where margaritas, cocktails, wine, and beer are all available for purchase.
We eat here often and if we aren’t starved, might simply get a large bowl of handmade guacamole to share and a margarita. My last meal was an order of Carnitas Tacos served street style with the best bowl of churro beans I’ve ever had! My personal go to is the Mixed Fajita Nachos: grilled steak and chicken, along with onion and peppers on top of a pile of fresh tortilla chips covered in queso. So good!
Atmosphere here is fun and can get a little loud on the Cantina side in the evenings or weekends. They often seat large parties of eight or more and work to create a fiesta vibe for folks celebrating in their establishment. A birthday here always includes a surprise — be warned! Covered outside seating is available and indoor seating can get full on a busy game night or Sunday lunch. Plan a 10-20 minute wait during peak times.

Rating: San Jose is a pleasure and I feel no qualms in offering them a 5/5 for consistency over time in both service and a diverse menu. My grandmother used to say ”Those young men working here are sure getting their exercise!” Service has always been quick and personal.
Like all restaurants, they can have an off night, but 9/10 times you can expect an encore worthy experience from these folks. Try something you haven’t tried before and experiment with a new flavor combo. There are lots of different things to love on their menu.
As I say each week, skip driving to the beach and support some local folks. Let’s bring life and energy to our local area businesses. As always I am open to take your feedback or suggestions. Email me at Positiveflownc@gmail.com.
