
The weather is hot, hot, hot, and so are the events hosted by community organizations over the next couple of weeks. There are movies, markets, tournaments, and distributions happening all over the county, and even an opportunity or two to help out those in need. From Bingo to heroes, the Good News has it all for the week of June 18.
The Columbus County Dream Center will be hosting ‘Bingo for Seniors’ on June 20 from 1-3 p.m. The afternoon will include exciting prizes, free food, music, and lots of fun. The center is located at 403 South MLK. Jr Avenue in Whiteville.
The Food Bank of Wilmington will be having a pop-up market on Saturday, June 21, from 9-11 a.m. at Jerusalem Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Chadbourn. All distributions are while supplies last. There are no income, residency, or ID requirements to receive assistance. All are welcome to attend. The church’s address is 6224 Chadbourn Highway.

Southeastern Community College promoted some of the great folks on staff at the school last week. Angie Ransom was named Associate Vice President of Education and Training, Dr. Mike Ammons is now Dean of Technical Programs and Training, and Brenda Orders was given the title of Dean of Business Careers and Training.
The Community Art Journey will be hosting their barn quilt painting workshop on Saturday, June 21. To register to select your pattern, you can call 910.625.8066. The facility can be found at Suite 112F in the Hillcrest Plaza in Lake Waccamaw.

After over twenty-six years of service to the town of Lake Waccamaw, Police Chief Scott Hyatt will be retiring. At the last Town Hall meeting, he was described as ” an asset to the community” and a “good friend” to Mayor Matt Wilson. Hyatt’s official retirement date is June 27. Congratulations Chief Hyatt.
The Columbus Baptist Association is collecting heavy winter coats, scarves, and gloves for homeless shelters and those in need in New York City. The items can be gently used with no tears, stains, rips, and working zippers, and sizes can include both children and adults. In each pocket, the CBA will place a Bible keychain to help the recipient have the word of God. The items can be dropped Monday-Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the office located at 208 South Thompson Street in Whiteville. If you have a large number of donations, a pickup can be arranged by call 910.642.2155.
Speaking of the CBA, the organization is also accepting sign-ups for their fifteenth annual Toy Store Golf Tournament. There will be two rounds-morning and afternoon, on Saturday, Sept. 16, at Lake-O-Lakes Golf Course. There is a limit of 22 teams per round, and the cost for each four-man team is $300. The price will include greens fee, cart, lunch, snacks, and drinks. The morning round will have registration at 8 a.m., and teams will register for the afternoon tournament at 12:30 p.m. Those interested can call the CBA office to enter your team.
The Columbus County Department of Aging will have a ‘Shred-A-Thon’ fraud prevention day on Wednesday, June 25, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. The event is help protect community members and the elderly from identity fraud by shredding outdated private documents, preapproved credit card offers, old bills, old tax records and paystubs, employment records, and other documents that include personal information. The Whiteville Senior Center is located at 827 Washington Street.
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville will be taking a trip back to the ’80s with their next installment of ‘Movies on Madison.’ The museum will be showing “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” on the facilities lawn on June 27. This 1989 Disney comedy about an inventor dad and his adventuring family is rated PG and runs 86 minutes. Come out before the movie begins to set up your seat and learn about amazing insects. The lawn will open at 8 p.m. for the free event, and the movie will begin at dusk. In the event of rain, the film will be shown indoors. This is a family-friendly event, so no pets, coolers, alcohol or smoking will be permitted. The NCMNS-W can be found at 415 South Madison Street in Whiteville. ‘Movie on Madison’ is made possible by the Columbus County Arts Council and is sponsored by the International Paper Foundation.
Associate Pastor Jacob Young and CPHC Ministries will be opening their campus up on June 28 from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. for a community market. Vendors may purchase 3 full size parking spaces for only $10 to set up their collectables, household items, books, crafts, sweet treats and more to sell. Additional space can be purchased for $5. Columbus County Schools will be holding a substitute update training class for those who acted at board approved substitutes during the 2024-2025 school year. The training is for teachers, cafeteria workers, and custodial subs. The event will be held at East Columbus Junior/Senior High School on July 22, July 23 at West Columbus High School, and July 24 at South Columbus. Each session will take place from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the schools’ cafeteria. Bus driver and bus driver training will be held at a later date. For questions, call 910.642.5168, extension 2014.

Last week, the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office had the honor of participating int he Future First Responders Camp hosted by Columbus County Parks and Recreation. Young campers got hands-on with public safety skills and met the faces behind the badges. EMTs, firefighters, and other community members also attended the event. The goal is to help plant seeds for a new generation of public safety members.
Families First, the local domestic violence shelter, is asking for donations of cleaning supplies and personal hygiene products. Items needed include all-purpose cleaners, shampoo and conditioner, toilet paper and paper towels, toothbrushes and toothpaste, body wash, deodorant, dish soap, laundry detergent, disinfecting wipes, and other basic household and hygiene essentials. Donations call be dropped off at the advocacy offices located at 121 West Main Street in Whiteville or 105 West Board Street in Elizabethtown.
