Former HP Sergeant Charged in Drug Case

Jamie Hinson (Columbus county Detention)

A retired N.C. Highway Patrol Sergeant has been charged with trafficking opiates.

James Frederick “Jamie” Hinson, 46, was arrested just after 2 p.m. today and released on a $40,000 secured bond, according to warrants and detention center records. He was charged with four counts of trafficking opiates (oxycodone),  one count of possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver opiates, maintaining a location for drug activities, and misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia. Hinson’s address was listed as 340 Love Mill Rd., Whiteville.

Warrants show that Hinson is alleged to have sold “more than 4 grams but less than 14 grams” of oxycodone. He was allegedly selling the drugs out of his seafood stand, Shipwrecked Seafood, on Hay Street in Whiteville. Hinson allegedly had plastic bags that he used to separate the drugs for sale.

The warrants were obtained by the sheriff’s office.

Hinson served much of his 20-plus years in Columbus and Bladen counties.

This is a developing story.
