Races Shaping up For Municipal Offices

Mayors in Lake Waccamaw and Whiteville will face challengers in November, while some towns still don’t have a full slate of hopefuls for the municipal elections this fall.

Filing for town and city offices ends Friday in Columbus County. Only residents of incorporated communities who have lived there for 30 days may register to vote or run for office in the Nov. 5 election.

In Whiteville, incumbent Mayor Terry Mann has three challengers. Brittany Payne, Brandon Acker and Mike Shchachnuk have filed to run for the city’s top seat. In City Council District 1, Linda Bright Smith is facing incumbents Helen Holden and Vickie Pait. Tim Collier is currently unchallenged in his bid for the seat in District Two.

At Lake Waccamaw, incumbent mayor Matt Wilson faces two opponents, Chad Smith and Greg Jacobs. Former police chief Scott Hyatt and Lynn Hinnant have filed for the East Ward commissioner’s seat. West Ward incumbent Frank Carroll faces Charlyne Jacobs and Curtis Andrews on the ballot.

No one has filed for mayor in Cerro Gordo, but Jeffrey Greene, Tracey Blackwell and Lisa McKee have all filed to run for town council.

Boardman’s mayoral race remains empty as of today (July 15), with Tevis Britt, Donald Britt, Crystal Rogers and Minnie Turbeville filing to run for council.

Incumbent Bolton Mayor Shawn Maynor is unopposed, as are incumbent aldermen Daniel “Danny Boy” Brown, Barbara Graham, and Kelvin Thurman Sr.

Alonzo McArthur and Ricky Brown have filed to run for Brunswick Town Commissioner. Brunswick commissioners appoint a mayor from their own ranks.

Fair Bluff Mayor Billy Hammond is unopposed, while Bradley Cutrell, Grayson Jarvis, and John W. Phillips are running for town commissioner.

In Sandyfield, Leonard “Pappy” Hall has filed to run for town council.

Tabor City has four candidates on the ballot for three council seats. Chris Fowler, Bryan Culbertson, Lamont Grate and Mitchel Strickland are running for those seats.

Former Chadbourn Mayoral candidate and town councilman Rashad Roberts and Drew Worley are running for council there.
