Motorists are being urged to slow down and be aware of water on roadways as up to three inches of rain are anticipated through this evening.

A flash flood warning has been issued for Columbus and Horry counties through 8 p.m.

At 4:36 p.m., the National Weather Service said one-half to 1.5 inches of rain had already fallen across the area, and an additional one to two inches are anticipated. The advisory is in place until 7:45 p.m.

Portions of East College Street near Mackenzie in Whiteville were reported impassable just before 5:15 pm. Other areas are also seeing rising water and water flowing across roads.

From one to two inches of rain have fallen in Whiteville this afternoon, and officials are concerned about flash flooding in some areas. Water is crossing the roadway in several areas, and stranded motorists are being assisted in Whiteville.

“If you see water on the roadway, don’t drive into it,” said Hal Lowder, Emergency Services Director for the city. “We say it all the time, but turn around, don’t drown.

“When your car get disabled by water, you’re endangering yourself, your family and first responders,” he said. “It doesn’t take much to send a car floating away, and that can be life threatening.”

Water is also crossing some flood-prone roadways in the east end, and touching the bridge on Water Tank Road in Delco.
