The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville just might have a feather up their sleeve as the facility flies into fall. The staff is excited to welcome Ornithology Research Curator John Gerwin on Sept. 13 as he spreads the word that it’s going to be about the birds for an all-day adventure.
Bird Walk
Join Gerwin and NCMNS-W from 7:30-10:30 a.m. for a morning of bird watching at the Helms Nature Preserve in Whiteville. The preserve is maintained by Wildlife Action of N.C. Because it is located on private land, registration is required to receive the address of the meeting place.
Call Chelsea Flowers at 910.788.5106 or email chelsea.flowers@naturalsciences.org to register.
Meet Me at the Museum: ‘Birds of Eastern N.C.’
Have you ever wondered what feathered friend has been hanging out in your own backyard? Ask this question and many more from 11:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. as Gerwin discusses ‘Birds of Eastern N.C.’
This event will be held at the museum, and registration to attend is not required.
Meet Me at the Museum: ‘From Farms to Binoculars: Birds and People on Sustainable Coffee Farms in Nicaragua’
Gerwin will talk about his work with birds and farmers on sustainable coffee plantations. Learn about how coffee is grown and harvested on sites where wildlife-friendly practices are integrated into the farming systems.
This informative discussion will take place on site at NCMNS-W from 2-3 p.m.
Avian Anatomy
How do birds fly, sing, and eat? Hang out and learn with Gerwin as he explains the anatomy of a bird through a demonstrative dissection for the final leg of the Ornithology journey.
This session will also take place at the museum from 3:30- 4 p.m.
If you can’t catch this im-peck-able convention, there will be other opportunities to learn about the avian community.
“Our pop-ups and Storytimes are bird themed during the month of September,” said Manager of Education Chelsea Flowers.
