Here’s today’s Bottom Line
Rain chances remain nearly zero through next Wednesday which will exacerbate drought conditions. Columbus County is listed on the latest Drought Monitor as “D0,” which is “abnormally dry.” Head north into Bladen county where D1 Moderate Drought conditions exist.
Again, very little rain chances as high pressure remains in control of our weather. The past few days I’ve been mentioning a weak little frontal boundary at play but that’s really in the process of falling apart this morning and I no longer believe this will play any factor in our weather pattern. Dry conditions with highs in the upper 80s will dominate through Wednesday.
Some cloudiness is possible Monday-Tuesday thanks to a northeast wind flow off the ocean, but that’ll be a short-lived wedge scenario. I don’t anticipate much temperature change… again highs in the upper 80s… but a little bit more humidity at play will make it feel like summer is hanging on past the equinox (which occurs Monday).
A much stronger frontal system starts to approach the area on Thursday with increased (and welcomed) rain chances Thursday and Friday.

Gabrielle is… hanging in there right now. There was some time on Friday when she was on life support as the center of the low was actually “exposed,” meaning there was very little cloudiness and lots of dry air and shear. The storm has pulled away from that area though and will likely strengthen to hurricane status in the next few days. She’ll “make the turn” and stay over the open ocean through her life cycle.
Hot on Gabrielle’s heels is another tropical wave off the west Africa coast. This will slowly move into an area where conditions are somewhat favorable for development… the NHC gives this area a 20% chance for development over the next 7 days.
There are no tropical threats to the Carolinas for the foreseeable future as this unusually quiet season continues.
