New program will have deputies working roadways and waterways.

Deputies were hard at work Saturday across Columbus County, monitoring boat and vehicle traffic for impaired drivers, seatbelt violations, and drug offenses.

The saturation patrols focused on Bolton, Buckhead, Lake Waccamaw, Guideway, Hallsboro, Nakina, St. James and Pireway, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

Among the arrests were four drug offenses, two insurance violations, 13 speeding tickets, one concealed weapon charge, and one outstanding warrant, along with a number of traffic violations.

Deputies were on the road and the water for the effort, which Sheriff Jody Greene said was just the beginning of a new program designed to help reduce crime both afloat and ashore.
