North Duplin Slips Past East Bladen 15-14

 

CALYPSO— North Duplin took advantage of early game turnovers to hold back East Bladen Friday night 15-14.

North Duplin with the win pushed its Carolina Conference record to 1-1 and 5-1 on the season with the victory. Both teams went scoreless in the first quarter before the Rebels’ Noa Quintanilla recovered an Eagles fumble at the East Bladen 38-yard line. This led to Quintanilla taking the ball 38 yards for a TD on the first play of the drive after the turnover to make it 6-0 North Duplin. East Bladen was hampered on offense in the first 12 minutes of the game with three fumbles for turnovers. The Eagles got on the scoreboard before the half with a Keyshawn Kemp 13 yard touchdown pass to Jaden Lewis to make it 6-6 at the half.

The Eagles took the lead with 5:59 left in the third quarter when Lewis ran it 13 yards to the house. Lewis then added the two-point conversion to give East Bladen a 14-6 lead. Things remained calm until early in the fourth quarter when North Duplin’s Trashawn Ruffin made a tackle for a loss at the Eagles six yard line. A defensive tackle in the end zone on the next play for a safety to put the score 14-8 Eagles. North Duplin put points on the board quick after the free kick with a Kiez Brock pass to Trashawn Ruffin from 17 yards out to tie the game at 14-14. The PAT put the Rebels ahead 15-14 with 7:03 left in the game. The Eagles failed on a drive late in the game to win the game.

North Duplin will host West Columbus (1-1, 1-5) next Friday night in a Carolina Conference matchup. East Bladen (1-1, 4-2) were led by Jaden Lewis with 86 yards rushing and a touchdown. Dashon Campbell also had 76 yards on 12 carries for the Eagles. Quarterback Keyshawn Kemp threw for 110 yards on 10-17 passing. East Bladen has a game to complete at home Monday against Hobbton. It was stopped due to lightning September 26 in the third quarter with 7:26 on the clock and East Bladen ahead 14-12.

The Eagles will then travel to The Swamp to face the East Columbus Gators (1-2, 2-5) Oct.10.
