Veterans Events Set for Tuesday

The Veterans Memorial Park will host one of two Veterans Day observances set for tomorrow.

Veterans Day is Tuesday, and two events are scheduled to honor those who have served the country.

Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I. At 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918, the official ceasefire went into effect, ending that war. In later years the holiday became Veterans Day honoring all who served in the military.

The Veterans Memorial Park will have a Veterans Day ceremony and luncheon, along with the ribbon cutting for the new Veterans Community Outreach Center. The building will be available for veterans organizations, fundraisers, events and other activities. Angela Norris said plans are also being finalized to use the building as a stopoff for Veterans Administration mobile service workers, reducing travel time for local vets.

Events will start at 11 a.m. at the park, located at 6354 James B. White Hwy. South (U.S. 701), Whiteville.

Also at 11 a.m., a special ceremony honoring veterans will be held in the superior courtroom of the main courthouse in Whiteville.

The public is encouraged to attend both events.

Since Veterans Day is a national holiday, many government offices, banks and businesses will be closed.
