Dog, Victim Take Down Burglar

A Whiteville-area man and his dog turned the tables on a would-be burglar Feb. 16, according to the sheriff’s office.

Irvin Nuez, 32, of 357 Honey Hill Rd., Hallsboro, was held without bond following the incident. He faces charges of first degree burglary, felony larceny, first degree trespassing, damage to property, and simple assault, according to detention center reports. Because he was awaiting trial on other charges, he was held without bond.

The sheriff’s office reported that deputies were called to Fairfield Drive at 10:33 p.m. to investigate a burglary. They found the owner of the home, Earl James Whitman Jr., detaining Nunez.

“The owner reported finding the suspect inside his camper located at the back of the property,” the report said.

During the altercation, the report said, Whitman’s dog bit Nunez. He was taken for medical evaluation before being arrested.

Several items of stolen property were found nearby, the report said, and returned to the owner.

Nunez is awaiting trial after a string of thefts in the Hallsboro and Sellerstown areas in 2025.
