The month of March is all about opportunities and community gatherings as we roll on into spring. Shop local, eat local, patronize small businesses, and take advantage of the farmers and open-air markets taking place in Columbus County. It’s the little folks who keep us afloat, so be a blessing where you can.

The Diaper Bank of North Carolina will be partnering with the Columbus County Department of Aging on March 12 to host the DBNC Essentials Hub from 12-1:30 p.m. at the Columbus County Senior Center.
They will be giving away free adult incontinence supplies to residents, and folks are asked to bring their own bags to the event. Supplies are limited and based on a first come, first serve basis. The center can be found at 827 Washington Street in Whiteville.

The Greater Fair Bluff Chamber of Commerce will have their forty-fifth annual banquet on Thursday, March 12, with registration and a time of fellowship at 6 p.m., and the event will begin at 6:30 p.m. It will be held in the Christian Life Center at Fair Bluff Baptist Church.
The meal will be catered by Chef Sarah Gore Events and Catering, and dessert will be provided by A Sweet Discovery-Jessica Pallitto. The church is located at 1205 Main Street. For complete information, visit www.fairbluff.com.
The Veterans Benefits Administration will be at the Veterans Memorial Park of America again this weekend on March 13 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. There is limited availability, and those interested are asked to call 910.840.5207 for an appointment.
Refreshments for vets will be served at the event. The park is located at 6354 James B. White Highway South in Whiteville.

The Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum will be hosting a Chilli Cook-Off on March 13 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. There will be hot prizes for the best chili. If you don’t want to participate in the contest but would like to take part of the Railroad Dinner, bring a side dish or dessert and cheer on the competitors.

The North Whiteville Volunteer Fire Department is gearing up again for their second annual Community Day. The free event will be held on March 14, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
The day will include fire truck displays and demonstrations, activities for kids, a free hotdog lunch, community resources, and a chance to meet local firefighters. Community Day will be hosted at 747 Peacock Road in Whiteville.

The Christian Life Center in Fair Bluff will also host a ladies spring conference on March 21 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. A light breakfast and lunch will be served. Speakers will include Ashton S. Cox with “The Lord is my Shepherd: Abiding in His Care,” Tamber Patterson with “Fighting Evil on the Technology Frontlines,” and Angela Huggins will teach a Bible Journaling class.
There is no charge for the conference, but those interested are asked to RSVP by calling or texting Helen Dotson with your name at 910.499.2191. The deadline to sign up is this Sunday, March 15.

As spring approaches, a tiny hero vital to the world will be out and about all over Columbus County. It’s honeybee swarm season, and if you see a group of displaced pollinators, call a local beekeeper to come help relocate the essential buzzy beauties.

Congratulations are in order for Elisabeth Stubbs of South Columbus High School. She was selected to attend the Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation Youth Tour this summer. The tour is an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. where Stubbs will join other students representing the co-op from around the country. They will visit historic sites, meet with elected representatives, and learn about the nation’s history and the cooperative business model.
Don’t miss your chance to sign your child up for the Youth Spring Soccer season with Columbus County Parks and Recreation. The deadline is March 15. This is a great opportunity for kids to stay active, learn new skills, and have fun with friends on the field.

The Columbus Baptist Association will hold their Encounter publicity team meeting on March 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the CBA office. They need folks from Columbus, Brunswick, and Bladen counties who know Jesus and will help spread the word about the Encounter Crusade.

There will be more opportunities to shop at the Columbus County Farmers Market this coming year. The market and its vendors will be open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Folks will be set up with produce, breads, spices, jewelry, and everything in between.
The market can be found at 132 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville.
Downtown Whiteville will be hosting their first Open-Air Market on March 19 from 4-8 p.m. on the Vineland Station Depot lawn. There will be vendors, fresh flowers, produce, honey, sourdough bread, microgreens, homemade pasta, and more.

Music in the Alley will also be happening from 7-9 p.m. right beside Colliers Jewelry. The Crenshaw Trucking Band is set to perform. Vineland Station Depot is located at 701 South Madison Street.

Columbus Career and College Academy is proud to announce that their own Tanijah Gerald placed first in the high school division of the 2026 AR Ammons Poetry Competition. She will be reading her poem at this years Columbus County Schools Celebrate the Arts exhibition.
The sixteenth annual Southern Farm Days will be back March 20-22 at the Boys and Girls Home of NC Horse Complex. Columbus County News will be live during the event, and we would love to spotlight your small business.

Lebanon Lodge #207, Chadbourn Lodge #190, and Tabor Lodge #593 will be hosting a veteran and first responder pancake breakfast on March 21 from 8-10 a.m. at 124 Pecan Street in Whiteville. All veterans, first responders, and their families are welcome to attend, share a meal, help celebrate the spirit of service.
Edgewood Elementary’s Jr. FFA will be taking orders for their fern sale through March 25. The plants will arrive on April 1 just in time for Easter, and you can pick them up at the school, or several of the kids will even deliver them to your door.
The ferns are $12.50 each, and you can either reach out to the school or contact a member of the Jr. FFA to get yours.
