Spring is upon us and it’s time for important things outside, like sports. It’s baseball, softball, track, tennis, golf, and soccer time. My problem is, I don’t have enough time get to all of this. I try to get to as many games as I can but it’s impossible to get them all. I am the entire sports department for CCN: editor, photographer, and reporter. I am a one-man show.

If you have any sports articles or information, contact me at 910.991.1181, tt6643@yahoo.com or ccntommytaylor@gmail.com. I appreciate the help and strive to get out all the sports in Columbus and Bladen Counties as I can. I can’t do it without you. So, thanks!
I have been given the opportunity to do the PA announcing for the Whiteville Softball team this year. After high school, I wanted to be a reporter and do sports. I knew my high school career was over (no talent) and I loved sports.
After wandering in the desert for 40 years like the Israelites, I am now living my dream. I am also a big Superman fan. I may never get to put on the tights and jump out the window but being a reporter like Clark Kent makes me feel like Superman every day.
With the warmer weather, things other than sports are upon us.
Like squirrels.
I see them in my yard, your yard, their yard, and his yard. They’re busy and everywhere — even PA booths.
At the first softball game for Whiteville this year, I arrived about an hour early to prepare for calling the game. A couple of the parents were there to help me set up (a great help).
As were putting stuff out to set up, I notice little brown balls everywhere. I first figured mice or rats got in the press box. We Cloroxed and cleaned. We began to hook up the scoreboard, microphone, and speakers. We look at the connection ends. Frayed and chewed. Confusion was on our faces.
Then there was a noise. One of the parents said, “Did you hear that?”
That is when I saw the squirrel.
He looked like he was about eight feet long as he went by my face. The squirrel flew past my head, out the press box window, landed near third base, and ran off in centerfield.
I lived, died, and was scared all at the same time. One I found my heart beating on the floor, I put it back in my chest and proceed to figure out how to hook up the equipment. We all laughed after it was over but it sure did put the fear of God in us.
So this spring, be on the watch out for sports….and squirrels.
