FLEX Online is the one-stop shop information resource for all things about Southeastern Community College’s digital classroom space – online courses. This is designed for students who need or prefer online learning from the comfort of wherever they are.

FLEX Online options include associates degrees, certificates or diplomas in curriculum areas of study in Arts, Science, Teacher Preparation, Business Administration, Medical Office Administration, Information Technology and Early Childhood Education. Online Short-term Training classes are found on Ed2Go and FundFive.

SCC Student Advisor and Counselor Julia Roberts said that FLEX Online puts students in control of when they want to complete assignments and tests. She said that online classes are for organized, motivated people who excel at meeting deadlines and due dates on their own.

Medical Office Administration Instructor Kaitlin Nobles and Early Childhood Education Instructor Amanda Heath agreed that online classes are perfect for working moms and dads with families, jobs or caretaker responsibilities who need the flexibility. They said most of their students prefer the online format due to scheduling and work duties.

Both Nobles and Heath said they are in constant contact with their students by phone, email and in-person office hours. Heath said she takes communication a step further with the Remind app, so that students receive push notifications to their phones when announcements are made. With most of Heath and Nobles’ students being adult learners with limited free time, they said the online format makes getting a degree that much easier for them.

“With SCC offering FLEX programs, we’re embracing the technology trends that our students will experience in the workplace today,” said Billy Tatum, Information Technology instructor. “With 100% online access, students can learn from anywhere, making it easier to balance work, family and personal responsibilities. Flexible scheduling allows learners to complete assignments at times that work best for them, helping reduce stress and improve success.”

Tatum explained that online IT programs provide practical, career-ready skills in areas like security, networking and technical support—skills that are in high demand in today’s workforce. He said that free tutoring and affordable tuition make these programs accessible and supportive for all students.

“Overall, online IT learning offers convenience, opportunity and a clear path to a rewarding career—all without putting your life on hold,” Tatum said.

McArthur Moore, a 2025 associate of arts graduate, completed his degree 100 percent online at SCC. He transferred to UNC Charlotte, where he is earning a bachelor of science degree in business administration fully online.

“In my experience, teachers were super responsive, responding to emails and chats quickly to ensure I fully understood the material,” Moore said. “I chose to go all online for two reasons.”

Moore started a business at the end of his senior year of high school, and, as a result, was often at different factories, office buildings or meetings during regular school hours. This would cause him to miss classes.

“The second reason is that I love being in control of my own schedule,” Moore said. “I am a night owl, and it wasn’t unusual for me to do my work late at night. Online studies allowed me to do that seamlessly.”

Moore advised online learners to create a schedule and have the discipline to stick to it. He said that online schoolwork takes discipline, but with the right structure and mindset, it is achievable.

TJ Bianchini, a 2024 graduate, completed two of her three associates degrees fully online in business administration and business – banking and finance at SCC. She said that earning her degrees online at SCC was a rewarding experience that made education more accessible and achievable.

“My instructors were very responsive and approachable,” Bianchini said. “They were always available and responded quickly whenever I had questions or concerns.”

Bianchini chose to attend college online because it offered flexibility that fit her home and work schedule. She said the convenience of online learning allowed her to manage her responsibilities effectively, and it was “a very affordable option.”

“I would encourage students to consider online courses and not be afraid to take that step,” Bianchini said. “Online learning offers great flexibility and allows you to work at your own pace while balancing other responsibilities. As long as you stay motivated, manage your time and reach out for help when needed, you can be very successful.”
